A new $50 million interdisciplinary research programme launched by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on Wednesday (September 13,2023), will examine various aspects of climate change. The Climate Transformation Programme, which will be led by NTU’s Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), will look to create climate solutions and educate future leaders to form a resilient and sustainable world. The Smart Nation and Digital Government Group (SNDGG) is set to merge with the digital development functions of the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) to form a larger Smart Nation group. Singapore to launch new training programme to boost semiconductor talent pool

On September 19, 2023, A new six-month training programme for integrated circuit design will be launched in August 2024 to train up to 150 people over the next five years, said Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong. Singapore will also double down on training research and development (R&D) talent to meet the target of producing 1,000 PhDs over the next 10 years, the minister added. Singapore has moved up two spots to fifth place in the Global Innovation Index (GII), leading the South-east Asia, East Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region. Singapore companies can buy international carbon credits from 2024 to offset up to 5% of taxable carbon emissions

On October 4, 2023, a set of eligibility criteria was released to ensure that the carbon credits used by companies to offset part of their taxable emissions are of high quality. From 2024, the carbon tax will be increased from $5 per tonne now to $25 per tonne, then to $45 per tonne from 2026 to 2027, with a view of reaching $50 per tonne to $80 per tonne by 2030. Singapore digital economy contributed 17.3% to GDP in 2022

On October 6, 2023, Singapore’s digital economy contributed $106 billion, or 17.3 per cent, to its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022 and created more than 200,000 tech jobs, according to new data released by the nation’s media regulator.
